Only the Lonely

Even though there must be suckers falling for those Nigerian Lottery email scams, you don't often find them copping to it. But when it comes to a love-based version of this same con – in which hopefuls send thousands of dollars to foreign potential bedmates – many victims aren't keeping so hush-hush. This twist on the classic Lonely Hearts Scam (made famous by Susanna Mildred Hill in the late nineteenth century) is found on almost every online dating site – yes, we're looking at you, too, Filipino Friend Finder – and these scammed lonely hearts are surprisingly willing to share their depressing, and honestly, pathetic stories. Google "dating" "online" and "fraud" and you'll find hundreds of embarrassing accounts, so many that we've had trouble picking the best quotes to share (although "He misspelled everything and I thought, 'This is no archaeologist'" isn't bad). We don't want to seem callous. Really. But with this being so close to Valentine's Day, well, we're honestly enjoying the hell out of them. And if most weren't so ridiculous, sure, we'd admit a few are probably a bit sad.

Check out the links below for a range of stories... like the woman who was emailing with a guy from Scotland who claimed his brother, in Nigeria, was hurt and needed money. She also "met" another guy from London whose son in Ghana had appendicitis. Both men promised to pay her back. Both men claimed to fall immediately in love with her. And both men were sent money. So of course she's now blaming eHarmony.

This one's the longest, but worth the fifteen minutes.
Love this headline.
Goddamn the price some people are willing to pay to get laid.
This guy thought he found the love of his life in Nigeria.
She actually fell for the line “You can trust me.”
In case you were in denial about Filipino Friend Finder.
Consider meeting the person you're going to marry.
She’s 25 and beautiful. Those should’ve been signs enough.

I found this on internet love scams. Love your blog:

VERY IMPORTANT!

It has come to our attention that at least one scammer from Senegal is pretending to be part of this site in order to make him seem more credible to his victims.
