And don't you forget it
Amnesia is such a soap opera-staple that when some real schmo claims to suffer from it, all parties involved seem to perk up, expecting a scam, double-cross or a crime to follow. Take John Darwin, a guy who disappeared while canoeing five years ago, and who has surfaced – claiming no memory of what's happened – just as his wife (recently pronounced a widow) had sold their two homes and moved to Panama City. Relief is lacking in this report, even though by all counts this could be a miraculous story. No, it seems the smell of a grift gone bad clouds the air and everyone’s just trying to pinpoint the what, how and when.
UPDATE: Well that didn't take long.
For some old-school amnesia fun, check out the Amnesiac’s Delight program at the new Silent Movie Theater on Fairfax. If you didn’t know, Cinefamily has taken over the space and you couldn’t ask for more out of a local independent theater (check out the schedule). This Sunday afternoon you can catch Singapore (1945, dir: John Brahm), a noir in which Ava Gadner plays the memory-deprived moll who’s hard to forget. In upcoming weeks, the series includes Shadow on the Wall, Black Angel, and Mirage.
